At Refine Design Architecture, we believe that every architecture design journey is unique—there is no one-size-fits-all path to building or renovating the home you envision.

What does the architecture design process look like?

The architecture design process typically moves through four key phases: pre-design, design, permitting, and construction. It begins with idea generation and discovery—understanding your goals, your site, and any regulatory requirements—then moves into active design, where floor plans and 3D renderings bring your vision to life. Once the design is refined and approved, we prepare and submit permit documents to your local jurisdiction. After permits are secured, detailed construction drawings are delivered so your builder can begin work with confidence.

Do I need a licensed architect for my architecture design project?

In Washington State, a licensed architect is not always legally required for every residential project, but their involvement is strongly recommended for any complex build, addition, or renovation. Architecture design involves far more than aesthetics—it encompasses structural considerations, code compliance, zoning regulations, and constructability, all of which a licensed architect is trained to navigate. Without professional guidance, homeowners risk costly mistakes, permit delays, or designs that simply don't perform as intended. Engaging a licensed architect from the start protects your investment and ensures your home is designed with intention and built to last.

How much does construction cost for an architecture design project?

Construction costs for a custom residential architecture design project vary widely and depend on the scope of work, the complexity of the design, site conditions, and the materials and finishes you select. Custom homes and significant renovations typically command higher costs per square foot than standard builds due to the level of craftsmanship and customization involved. It is important to establish a realistic budget early in the architecture design process so that design decisions remain aligned with what you are prepared to spend. Your architect can help you understand cost implications at each stage and work with you to prioritize where your budget will have the greatest impact.

How long does an architecture design project take from start to finish?

The timeline for an architecture design project depends heavily on the size and complexity of the work involved. For most custom residential projects, the design phase alone typically takes between two and four months, encompassing schematic design, design development, and construction document preparation. The permitting phase can add additional weeks or months depending on your jurisdiction's review timelines. Construction itself generally runs between six and eighteen months, with larger or more complex projects falling toward the higher end of that range.

How much does an architect charge for architecture design services?

Architect fees for residential architecture design services typically range from approximately eight to fifteen percent of the total construction cost, though the exact percentage varies based on project scope, the level of service engaged, and the complexity of the design. Smaller or more straightforward projects may fall toward the higher end of that range on a percentage basis, while larger custom homes often settle toward the lower end. Some architects also offer fixed-fee or hourly arrangements depending on the phase of work. Investing in professional architecture design services generally pays for itself through better design outcomes, fewer construction errors, and a smoother permitting process.

Why hire a professional architect for your architecture design project?

A professional architect brings a level of design thinking, technical knowledge, and project coordination that is difficult to replicate through any other means. Great architecture design is not simply about how a home looks—it is about how it functions, how it flows, how it captures light, and how it holds up over decades of daily life. Architects are also skilled navigators of the permitting process, helping you avoid costly delays and ensuring your project meets all applicable codes and regulations. Perhaps most importantly, thoughtful architecture design produces spaces that genuinely elevate how you live—homes that feel right the moment you walk through the door and continue to reward you every day after.

Good design goes a long way.
