Exterior Addition Option B shifts the deck to overlook the yard and creates a continuous massing of the lower roof. This gives a stacked effect to the building form to bring the scale of the structure down.

Project Description:

Tucked away in woods of Wollochet Bay, this 1940's bungalow remodel utilizes the existing footprint and structure to modernize the interior spaces. This project includes the reorganization of traditional living spaces and the conversion of an existing garage into usable heated area. Exposing the existing beams and the wood T&G ceiling adds to the character of this revitalized space and complements the modern palette. With ample opportunity to introduce natural light, the design makes use of existing windows and careful placement of new openings to brighten the entry lounge. This interior remodel project beautifully transforms the existing space into a cohesive and functional living environment that incorporates a dedicated home office and seamlessly ties together the dining and entertaining areas using natural materials.

The remodel introduces a home office area that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. The office is partially enclosed by an open shelving unit, which creates a defined space without compromising the open-plan layout. This shelving unit not only provides ample storage for office supplies and personal items but also serves as a display area for decorative pieces, adding a touch of personality to the workspace. The large windows behind the office desk allow natural light to flood the area, creating a bright and inspiring environment for productivity. The desk itself is thoughtfully positioned to offer a serene view of the outdoors, promoting a sense of calm and connection with nature during work hours.

The dining area is designed to be an inviting space for both casual meals and entertaining guests. A cozy nook is created with built-in seating, featuring a cushioned bench that enhances comfort and encourages leisurely dining experiences. The round dining table, paired with modern chairs, complements the overall aesthetic with its simplicity and elegance. A pendant light above the table adds a focal point and provides soft, ambient lighting, perfect for intimate gatherings.

Throughout the remodel, the use of natural materials plays a crucial role in tying the spaces together. The warm wood tones of the flooring and furniture create a cohesive look that is both inviting and timeless. The wooden elements are complemented by neutral-colored walls, allowing the natural textures and grains to stand out. The use of natural materials extends to the built-in shelving and cabinetry, which are crafted from light wood, adding to the airy and organic feel of the space.

The living area, adjacent to the dining space, is designed for relaxation and comfort. It features a comfortable armchair, a rustic wooden console table, and a modern wood-burning stove that adds warmth and charm. The open layout ensures a seamless flow between the living, dining, and office areas, making the space feel connected and harmonious. Large windows in the living area continue the theme of natural light and provide views of the surrounding greenery, enhancing the sense of tranquility.

This interior remodel project successfully creates a multifunctional space that is both beautiful and practical. The integration of a home office, dining, and entertaining areas, along with the use of natural materials, results in a harmonious living environment that meets the needs of modern living while maintaining a connection with nature. The thoughtful design elements and cohesive aesthetic make this remodel a stunning example of functional and stylish interior architecture.

In addition to the interior remodel, a second story addition is also in the works. With the goal of creating an additional bedroom and home office space upstairs, the second story addition aims to preserve the character of the existing house by imitating the dramatic roof lines and maintaining the materiality, while introducing modern luxuries such as a roof deck and tall ceilings to capture daylight.
