Project Description:

This architectural project represents a harmonious blend of modern design and natural landscape in the Methow Valley, transforming a rustic cabin and its accessory structures into a cohesive, contemporary retreat. The original site featured a primary studio cabin with two scattered accessory buildings. These structures, while functional, felt disconnected and lacked a unified flow. Our approach was to reimagine the layout and transform these disparate elements into a singular architectural statement that embraces the surrounding beauty of the Methow Valley.

The first step in the renovation was relocating the accessory structures, positioning them strategically to establish a closer relationship with the main cabin. Once relocated, these buildings were stitched together through a series of glass hallways. The transparent connectors serve a dual purpose: they not only unify the interior spaces, but also create seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor environments. These hallways frame the stunning views and flood the interiors with natural light, fostering a strong connection with the landscape.

Contemporary design elements were introduced to update the aesthetic and functionality of the existing cabins. Corten steel skirting wraps around the base of each structure, giving the project a sleek, modern edge while offering durability and fire protection. The corten steel's weathered patina echoes the natural tones of the surrounding earth and rock formations, helping the structures feel grounded in their environment.

Large picture windows, another key addition, redefine the interior spaces by opening them up to the sweeping vistas of the Methow Valley. These windows provide panoramic views of the rolling hills, grassy meadows, and distant mountain ranges, making nature an integral part of the living experience. Each cabin is thoughtfully oriented to maximize its unique views, creating private nooks and expansive living areas that draw the eye outward.

The material palette was carefully selected to reflect the natural surroundings. Local cedar cladding was chosen for its rustic charm and durability, enhancing the visual connection between the buildings and the landscape. Over time, the cedar will weather and soften in tone, blending even more seamlessly with the mature foliage and wild grasses. The fire-protective properties of the corten steel cladding offer both aesthetic appeal and practical resilience, ensuring the structures can withstand the elements while maintaining their modern character.

The positioning of the buildings within the site was a critical consideration in the design process. Nestled between rolling hills and framed by grassy meadows, the cabins are both protected and open, offering an experience of immersion in nature without sacrificing comfort or style. The design subtly echoes the topography, with sloping roofs that mirror the undulating landscape, while the glass hallways create a sense of lightness and transparency, allowing the landscape to flow through the site.

In this full interior and exterior renovation, the result is a contemporary retreat that embraces both modern living and the raw beauty of the Methow Valley. By blending natural materials with modern design sensibilities, we created a space that is timeless, inviting, and fully integrated into its environment. This project is a testament to how thoughtful design can honor the past while looking towards the future, creating a home that is as functional as it is beautiful.
