Have questions?
We have answers.

At Refine Design Architecture, we believe that working with a building architect isn't a one-size-fits-all process—every project is as unique as the people behind it.

What is the building architect process from start to finish?

The building architect process typically begins with idea generation and pre-design research, where your goals and site conditions are carefully evaluated. From there, the design phase transforms those ideas into refined floor plans and 3D renderings. Once the design is complete, your architect prepares and submits permit documents to the appropriate jurisdiction. After permits are secured, construction drawings are issued to your general contractor so building can begin.

Do I need a building architect for my project?

In Washington State, a licensed architect is not always legally required for every residential project, but it is strongly recommended for anything beyond straightforward construction. A building architect brings technical expertise, design vision, and code knowledge that can prevent costly mistakes before they happen. Complex custom homes, additions, and renovations especially benefit from professional architectural oversight. Hiring an architect early in the process often saves time and money in the long run.

How much does building architect work cost to construct?

Construction costs vary widely depending on the scope, complexity, materials, and specifications of your project. Custom homes with high-end finishes and unique site conditions will naturally cost more than a straightforward addition or remodel. Your building architect can help you understand the cost implications of different design decisions early in the process, allowing you to make informed choices. While it is difficult to provide a universal number, your architect is a valuable partner in managing expectations and aligning design with your budget.

How long does the building architect process take?

The timeline for a building architect project depends heavily on the scope and complexity of the work. Design phases typically range from two to four months, encompassing pre-design, schematic design, and construction documentation. The permitting process varies by jurisdiction and can add additional time before construction begins. Once underway, construction itself generally takes between six and eighteen months, with larger or more complex projects falling toward the longer end of that range.

How much does hiring a building architect cost?

Architect fees for residential projects typically range from eight to fifteen percent of the overall construction cost, though this can vary based on the scope of services provided. Some architects charge a flat fee, others bill hourly, and many use a percentage-based structure tied to construction value. The level of involvement—whether full service from design through construction administration or a more limited scope—also affects the total fee. Investing in a skilled building architect often pays for itself through better design outcomes, smoother permitting, and fewer surprises during construction.

Why hire a building architect for your home project?

A building architect brings together design expertise, technical knowledge, and project coordination skills that are difficult to replicate with other professionals alone. From optimizing your floor plan and capturing natural light to navigating permit requirements and reviewing contractor work, an architect adds value at every stage. Thoughtful architectural design also creates spaces that genuinely elevate daily life—homes that feel intuitive, warm, and built to last. Most importantly, a great building architect listens deeply and translates your vision into a home that truly reflects how you live.

Good design goes a long way.
