Project Description:

Located in the picturesque Madrona neighborhood of Seattle, this project transforms a charming home into a serene retreat amidst the trees. Perched on a steep slope, the residence embraces its natural surroundings, and the addition of a third story enhances the home’s connection to the landscape while providing breathtaking views and expanded living spaces.

The highlight of this addition is a thoughtfully designed library that sits at the heart of the new third floor. The library, surrounded by windows, offers a peaceful haven with panoramic views of the treetops, creating the sense of being in a treehouse. This unique space invites homeowners to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature while enjoying a quiet corner for reading, working, or reflection.

The steep slope of the site presented both challenges and opportunities. The new addition leverages this unique topography to maximize the views and the feeling of elevation, all while maintaining the home’s structural integrity and complementing the existing architecture. The design includes expansive decks and outdoor spaces that extend the living area and further enhance the experience of being surrounded by nature.

Materials and finishes were carefully selected to harmonize with the home’s natural environment. The addition integrates seamlessly with the existing structure, with shingles and trim that maintain the home’s classic character. The interior features warm wood accents and large windows that flood the space with natural light, making it feel open, airy, and connected to the outdoors.

This project represents the perfect balance between functionality and tranquility. The third-story addition not only expands the home’s livable space but also creates a unique retreat that feels like an escape from the city while being located in the heart of Seattle.

Whether enjoying the morning sun on the deck, watching the seasons change through the library’s windows, or simply taking in the calming presence of the trees, this Madrona home addition is a testament to how thoughtful design can enhance both a home’s livability and its relationship with the environment.
