Mountain Side Cantilevered Home

An aerial view of the hillside that this home is perched off of.

We used undulating landsaing and evergreen vegetation to provide privacy form the neighborhood road. The opaque plane and orentiaion of the upper mass also alleviates privacy concerns.

We like to mix rustic or traditional material colors and textures when using modern massing. This allows for a simplicity in form and massing, an easy understanding of spaces and shapes. The texture and intricacy can then come from materials that are expected and comfortable.

Location: Washington State

Area: 3,500 SF

Architect: Refine Design Architecture

As a residential architect in the mountains, we jumped at the opportunity to provide a design for this modern home to respond directly to its dramatic mountainside setting. The concept began with two masses of equal proportion: one grounded as a stone-clad plinth, the other rotated above to embrace the sweeping mountain views.

The plinth is anchored into the slope, retaining the hillside and aligning with the site’s natural contours. Above it, the elevated glass volume houses the living, dining, and lounge areas, cantilevering outward to capture uninterrupted panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains.

This cantilever not only frames the interior with expansive glass but also creates a sheltered patio below, blending indoor comfort with outdoor living. A double-stack fireplace pierces both levels, extending just above the patio to provide warmth and atmosphere for gatherings throughout the year.

The result is a residence that fuses contemporary form with rugged terrain, exemplifying how a residential architect in the mountains can create architecture that is both refined and deeply connected to place.
