Alpine Overlook Residence

Location: Banner Elk, NC

Area: 4,900 SF

The Alpine Overlook Residence is a custom mountain home designed to emphasize connection to the surrounding landscape through low-profile massing, expansive glazing, and sheltered outdoor living spaces. Organized around a central great room volume, the home features a gently curved roof form that unifies a series of horizontally expressed living areas while responding to the natural contours of the site. The roofline extends beyond the conditioned envelope to provide deep overhangs that support passive solar control, protect outdoor gathering spaces, and enhance year-round usability in a mountain climate.

Primary living spaces are oriented to capture long-range views while maintaining privacy from neighboring properties. Floor-to-ceiling windows introduce natural light into the interior and strengthen the relationship between interior living areas and exterior terraces. Covered outdoor rooms wrap the perimeter of the main level, encouraging indoor-outdoor living and allowing occupants to engage with the landscape in multiple seasons.

A walk-out lower level is integrated into the natural slope of the site, preserving the home’s low visual profile from the uphill approach while providing additional living and recreational space. The detached garage is positioned to create a defined entry sequence and reduce visual clutter from primary view corridors. Horizontal cladding and simplified material transitions allow the structure to sit comfortably within its environment, reinforcing the home’s contemporary mountain character.

Throughout the design process, emphasis was placed on site-responsive planning strategies that enhance comfort, durability, and performance. The Alpine Overlook Residence reflects a modern approach to custom residential architecture rooted in climate, orientation, and connection to place.
